Norovyn Altankhuyag (Mongolian: Норовын Алтанхуяг) is the First Deputy Prime Minister of Mongolia. Previously, he served as Minister of Agriculture and Industry between 1996–2000 and Minister of Finance from 2004-2006. In the year of 2008, he was elected from National Consultative Committee (NCC) as the Leader of Democratic Party of Mongolia following the party's defeat in the 2008 Mongolian legislative election

Early life

Altankhuyag was born in Uvs province in Mongolia and attended Ulaangom high school in 1966. After graduation from high school in 1976, he chose to study at Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in National University of Mongolia. After completion of university, he was honored to stay as teacher at his university.

Political career

During 1990 Democratic Revolution in Mongolia, he was one of pioneers of youth movement. With his colleagues, he initiated Democratic Socialist Movement. On Feb 21, 1990, there was the first meeting to establish Mongolian Social Democratic Party and he was elected a member of party establishment commission.

Between the years 1990-2006, he served as General Secretary 4 times at different parties. He was elected twice as a Member of Parliament.

After the 2008 general election, the previous Leader Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj stepped down as a result of election defeat and Altankhuyag became Democratic Party's new Leader.

Party leader

During his leadership, Democratic Party of Mongolia launches several programs in order to strengthen valuable items of democracy and build the civil society , one of which is "Монгол Хүн 2020 хөтөлбөр (Mongolian People- 2020)".
